Perpignan 2003 : National Winner : Willy De Schepper (Gooik)

Perpignan, the last international race of 2003, organised by "De Belgische Verstandhouding". It is not an easy task for the pigeons to come back. Liberated at exact 7h00. On the morning of Saturday 2 August, nobody knew that there could be come back already some pigeons the same day. It happened it were 4 French pigeons which came back Saturday evening. Their distance is 740 kilometer. This is good for 4 first prizes international. The come back is settled checkmate. Situation, wind and very hot weather were the reason for the big selection.
Perpignan, after Barcelona, Cahors and Marseille is one of the races where a big number of interests are in Belgium and other countries.
This year there are 17.388 old pigeons, divided as : 7.479 Belgium, 5.883 Holland, 2.151 German, 1.638 French, 78 English and 101 Luxembourg pigeons.
Also 4.048 yearling pigeons, where 3.970 Belgium and 78 Luxembourg pigeons.
Glamour winner in Belgium is finally Willy De Schepper of Gooik. International only the 5th place … to change this is only possible if they do the liberation so that any pigeon can come back the same day.
Willy De Schepper, retired butcher since some years, and already busy with pigeons when he was very young, basketed 15 old pigeons to Perpignan. And it was his 1e nominated pigeons who arrived Sunday morning very early. The gummy ring went into the clock at exact 7.13'13''. This is good for the national and provincial honour. This pigeon get a speed of 889,39 meter/min.
De Schepper clocked very quick his second pigeon which make about 25 national.12 of the 15 basket pigeons make prize, with in the club 1e - 2e - 4e - 5e and 6e etc. All the first nominated pigeons where there. Only the 7e was not the right but the reason for that was he came back a little later and he was hurt.
And now the most important : the first 4 pigeons from Perpignan, with Willy De Schepper, are 4 direct pigeons from Jef Deridder, the man where we were some weeks ago for the victory on Cahors, the race which change from national to Interprovincial race.
It sounds strange but in 2001 Willy De Schepper bought the second round of young pigeons with Jef Deridder. A 70-80 pigeons. Some moved immediately to the breeding loft and the other went to the racing loft. The result not lies.

We could talk with Willy De Schepper very calm. We remember of course his very famous '150', 2305150 90, who was 2 Ace Pigeon K.B.D.B. 1994 and won the same year also 2 International Perpignan and was also 1 Belgium Olympic pigeon in Utrecht. A grandson of the '155' must won in 2001 the 1 National Bourges, he is still nominated as second because the winner was cachted with drug, but till now there is no rectification. But also a pity is that this pigeon never come back from the race of Perpignan in 2002.
Our guest Willy De Schepper, he is very proud to get all the felicitations with his national victory on Perpignan. We got the chance to get a lot of pigeons in our hands. What we recognised with all of them is the very good condition after their come back. Son Geert De Schepper, who is vet, has the authority to keep this colony in good condition. He makes the medical escort for the pigeons, and play very short on the ball. This moment he has 16 old widowhoods and 14 yearlings. They are divided into 2 groups. The first group race Tours, Barcelona and Perpignan. The second group have to go to Cahors, Montauban, Dax and Perpignan. (4 strong long distance races, where on they have in the Strijlandtstraat 52 in Gooik, find their hart.).

Here are also 15 breeding pairs who give every year about 80 youngsters. Their colony is built up of Deridder pigeons, which are paired up to Georges Carteus of Ronse, the other specialist and traditional very good racer on Perpignan. They have also some Stiens brothers and Gyselbrecht pigeons.

The winner 2317902 01, a dark yellow eye and cock, middle type with a very silky feather and a wing according the book.
"A special pigeon' says Willy, as widowhood he never makes dirty his box but for the neighbours they don't like it because all get out when he fly outside.
At fathers side again the famous Motta from Gerard Van Hee of Wervik. The 'Blauwe As' from Jef Deridder. At mother side the Brinkman pigeons through Alex Rans from Herent.
Conclusion : International the flowers go to French (their location and short distance are the reason, it was a very strong race with very hot weather and a very burning sunshine) but in fact is the winner of Willy De Schepper an honour performance, where we have to congratulated the father and son Geert. Alone the way where De Schepper get back the pigeons from Perpignan is admirable.
The selection was strong … and all the pigeons which get prize on Perpignan must be very good one.

The lost Son.
