Loft Deno - Herbots

1998 was a SUPERYEAR for the new combination :
JOS DENO - HERBOTS, LEEFDAAL
A TOTAL OF 52 X 1st PROVINCIAL IS SHOWN ON THE IMPRESSIVE PALMARES !!

At the end of '97 and the beginning of '98 we all heard about Jos Deno, that he possibly was going to stop with the pigeons. Because of his busy life as an undertaker, Jos has to work almost every Saturday so then he has no time to look for his birds. Several times in 1997, he found out that his pigeons were already on the loft. Now, in 1998, Jos switched over to the long distance, with help from his friend Philip Herbots.

Fond :
Philip encouraged his friend Jos and so the tandem Deno-Herbots raised, in '98 it was the one-day fond. The basis of which Jos disposes, has already proved that they can handle the Semi-Nationals and the Nationals. They have showedit by their victories from Chateauroux and Clermont Ferrand. This basis still exists for 50% of those Verbruggen pigeons. Through the years about 100 moved from Gommaire straight to Jos, superior class pigeons with great feathers which is very important according to Jos. Without good plumage, no good pigeons, white eyed pigeons with character. These birds were also paired to the old breed of Jos, especially the line of the "Witneus" and the other Meulemans birds from the old couple of Karel, the "Oude Vandenbosche x Janssen hen".

Then he also got some reinforcement from Gaby Vandenabeele ; from several National winners from Brive and Limoges. Also he got some of the wonderboy from Brussegem, Erik Limbourg, here we also find several good-flying pigeons.

So you can see that the basis of fond is definitely present.

The friendship with the Herbots Brothers already produced some top-products which have shown their results already. Because they form a tandem now, the heavy fond-violence did nothing but growing the last few months.

I saw there an extreme beautiful round of youngsters from Hollands best fondplayer, Jean Hausoul, a supercolony on the one-night flights.

So we can say that Jos again has the courage and the motivation to get on with his birds. The transition to 1998 already showed the results but they are ready to throw very high in 1999.

Enjoy it too :

The results for 1998 : 7 x 1st Provincial
All together Jos has a total of 52 x 1st Provincial. His title of EMPEROR OF BRABANT is safe with those good results. Who did this before and who will do it after him ?

The pigeongame at the home of Deno :
Jos plays with about 60 widowers and in 1998, he started with 16 hens on widowhood. In '98 it were most of the time the girls who did their best and got those several provincial victories. So we can say that this was a very strong group of yearling-girls, which flew as hard as possible.

His system with the hens in '98 :
At the beginning of the season those hens had a nest, afterwards they moved to the loft next to their old one and there they are only seperated by a little slidingdoor. On this loft they rest on little shelfs. But at the beginning they didn't like to train that much, 5 minutes and the training was over. When Jos read about this in the papers, he found out that most of those hens had no little doors, they could see eachother. Then Jos put some fences in between and the hens could only rest on their own shelf. Very soon the training was nice to see by the fancier. They flew from 40 minutes till an hour and also the prestations became better. The hens train from out of their resting-cot and twice a week they are left into their nest-cot, but they are not allowed into their own little cot. It strikes us that here they eat a lot more too.

When Jos notices that the hens are pairing among eachother, he lets them into their nest-cot and givers them a saucer in their own little cots but without a cock and so they calm down.
On the day they have to be put in, they can have their cock from in the afternoon so they can "make love" as much as they want. When they get home their partner is waiting for them and the birds are left together till noon from the day after. It is very important that the hens are put in the basket every week.

Between the fond-flights, they get a Momignies, Soissons or Toury to fly. If you don't do that, they will paire among eachother and by doing so they keep a rhythm and also the moulting will be slowed down by flying every week. They are fed a sports-mixture and the food stays on the cot for about 15 minutes and then it is moved to the cot of the "loose" pigeons.

This for the beautiful results with the hens but also with his cocks, Deno-Herbots had a good season. How do they treat and prepare those birds? We already noticed that the cocks put down great results in '98 on the fond-flights.

These are the same birds who participated on the mid-fond and the Semi-Nationals in the preceding years. Those guys are played every 14 days and the week they don't have to fly in competition, Jos will drive them at 50 or 60 km and their hens are always waiting when they get home. So they'll always know their partner and they meet their "wife" very week so they won't loose their motivation. Before the pigeons are put in, the cocks don't get to see their hens but in time they know why they have to get home as fast as possible. That is why they always get to see the hen when Jos goes to set them free himself.

Food and training are very important as well here.
The whole season through, the birds are fed sports-mixture, purification isn't found in the books of Deno. The birds are fed up because when you have to do hard labour, you have to eat well that is why there is always sports-mixture on the menu. There isn't fed any candy or peanuts because Jos thinks this isn't realy necessary. Something he gives regulary is beeryeast, Zell Oxygen and Optimix from his vet Raf Herbots, whom he visits 3 or 4 times a year. This is more then enough and when he notices something wrong during the season, he contacts Raf once more. But also the enviremont and the loft itself is of great importance and something we notice here is the large measure of oxigen so he hasn't much of head-deseases.

Jos pays a lot of attention to the training-flights. Twice a day the widowers have to fly with the flag, they have to fly 30 till 40 minutes. Only by training so hard, they get such a good condition and they have to keep it that way. But on the other side the birds also get a chance to recuperate in the wright way. The pigeons won't have to get out on Sunday or a Monday morning. Then the cocks get their rest in opposition to the hens. Rest takes care of a faster recuperation, so the batteries are loaded again for their next flight.

Outside the loft there are several baths, which have to be filled with clean water every day. Jos thinks that all pigeons have to get a chance to take a bath whenever they like because this is good for the quality of the feathers. Also during the dead season the cocks are allowed to fly free till the late evening. The throughs are always filled with food and during this period they get beeryeast four days on a week. I also noticed the great deal of of by-products. On all of the cots we find seceral kinds of : pikstone, pikpot, seaweed, several kinds of minerals and vegetable-grain. It isn't allowed that the birds have shortcomings so they get everyhting there is in stock. This is best for the good moulting and the plumage for the next season.

I think that the FIGARO and  the KAPOEN are possibly two superior pigeons from the colony Deno-Herbots, two guys from which Jos can say they are always there. These are also birds to be proud of, they are capable to fly top prices for several years.

The young rod :
Before Jos always darkened the loft of the youngsters but now he quited doing this. Not because of the results but because he didn't have the time. When you choose to play the long distance, you have to handle it differently. The youngsters have to grow into beautiful old birds. Young violence which is played very hard, have to be stopped sooner. To play the fond-flights, you need old birds. Young pigeons with great results are often good for about three years. What they mean to do now is to play the birds till they are 5 or 6 years, just like the Figaro.

Although the youngsters are left together and played on nest, they put down some great results. The changing to the fond didn't make any difference to their method of learning. They will still take away their youngsters for several times. The young birds are always carried away in group, for about 3 times per week at a distance of 30 till 50 km. It is very important to them to have lots of experience, what will do them good in the future. They also get the same treatment as the old birds which means : enting against the pox and paramyxo and of course the control of the vet. Also on the cots of the youngsters we find those wooden grids and the automatic bands to make the cleaning easier. The rest of the time is used to bring them away himself and to motivate them.

Which points are the most important at Deno-Herbots ?

When I asked Jos this question, he answered the good pigeon and the good family. When both of this is good, soon or later we have to have good pigeons and that's why he stays attached to his old breed. Several top-pigoens are breeded from this basis but in the future they will try to make the pigeons even stronger so they get more staying-power for those long distance flights. But then again they would like to keep the kind of plumage they have now because the soft feathers are of great importance for the breeding and the flying.Another point which is typical for this breed are the white eyes.

Besides the good family, the pigeon also needs an escort, healthy pigeons are needed to come to such fine results. At this point it is of great importance that the birds get lots of oxygen and that is one thing they get in Leefdaal. Almost on every loft we find "air conditioning" in the front of the loft with the widowers, the hens and also with the youngsters. Athough the loft is build simply, they are also build efficient and the birds live there in a cosy way. The seperate pigeon-cots are all build in a different way but always with enough oxygen. In the dead season they can fly free as long as they want, they have to recharge their batteries for the next season. The year 1999, which is expected to be a great fond-year. In 1998 the eyes were on the new tandem Deno-Herbots but we see that they had a great year which is closed with 7 Provincial victories, a Semi-National Perigieux and the 2nd International Marseille with the hens.

Lots of other good fond-colonies would like to sign for such a fantastic year, which they had with those results. A nice way to close down their first year of long distance
